Since 1826, Pulteney Distillery by Wick\u2019s historic harbour has crafted a single malt scotch whisky that is the very essence of its coastal location. Being distilled and matured by the sea coupled with meticulous oak cask selection creates as distinctive flavour which sets it apart from other single malt Scotch whiskies. Old Pulteney achieved top ten status in the UK single malt market in 2012, and is renowned for being The Maritime Malt.<\/p>\n
THE PLACE: WICK <\/strong><\/p>\n Pulteney Distillery is located in the town of Wick in Caithness<\/span> \u2013 the far north east corner\u00a0of Scotland on the rugged coastline,\u00a0only 16 miles away from John O\u2019Groats,\u00a0which is the most northerly point on the\u00a0mainland of Britain.<\/p>\n THE MAN: SIR WILLIAM JOHNSTONE\u00a0<\/strong>PULTENEY<\/strong><\/p>\n Although founded in 1826\u00a0by James Henderson, the distillery and\u00a0the single malt produced there owe a\u00a0lot to the man after whom they are both\u00a0named. William Johnstone was born\u00a0in Dumfries, south west Scotland on\u00a0October 19th 1792. He studied law and\u00a0went on to become an eminent advocate.\u00a0He lived in Edinburgh, where he associated with the country\u2019s leading thinkers,\u00a0writers and philosophers, and his circle\u00a0of friends included the economist Adam Smith and architect, Robert Adam.<\/p>\n In 1760, William Johnstone married heiress\u00a0Francis Pulteney, the third daughter of the\u00a0MP and government official Daniel Pulteney.\u00a0It was at this time that William Johnstone\u00a0changes his name to William Johnstone\u00a0Pulteney. Pulteney became the Governor of the British Fisheries Society and\u00a0appointed Telford to design a new harbor\u00a0and housing for the world\u2019s then largest\u00a0herring fishing port, at Wick in Caithness.\u00a0Pulteney oversaw the development of the\u00a0community and the creation of \u2018Pulteneytown\u2019 to house the fishermen and the\u00a0construction of a new harbor. The small\u00a0town of Wick, once only accessible by\u00a0sea, became a source of wealthy and\u00a0prosperity, symbolized by the \u2018silver darlings\u2019 ( erring) and \u2018gold\u2019 ( whisky).<\/p>\n
